Anastasia by Maggie Blackwell6/12/2023 Thus, three of the five major drivers of global environmental change have previously unknown interactive effects on plant-pollinator mutualisms that could not be predicted from studies of individual drivers in isolation. Alarmingly, bees were attracted to, and consumed more, nectar from a treatment that reduced their survival by 22%. Using a pumpkin model system, we show that these drivers non-additively affect flower morphology, phenology, flower sex ratios and nectar chemistry (sugar and amino acids), thereby altering the attractiveness of nectar to bumble bee pollinators and reducing worker longevity. However, nitrogen deposition, climate warming and CO(2) enrichment could interact to disrupt this crucial mutualism by altering plant chemistry in ways that alter floral attractiveness or even nutritional rewards for pollinators. Drivers such as land use, invasions and climate change can affect pollinator diversity or species encounter rates. Environmental changes threaten plant-pollinator mutualisms and their critical ecosystem service.

The two towers paperback6/12/2023 The first section follows the divergent paths of several important figures from The Fellowship of the Ring, but tells nothing of its central character, on whose fate so much depends, enabling the reader to share in the suspense and uncertainty of the characters themselves. It begins and ends abruptly, without introduction to the characters, explanations of major plot elements or a satisfying conclusion. Loosely, any pair from a set of six towers in the story could plausibly fit the title: Cirith Ungol, Orthanc, Minas Tirith, Barad-dûr, Minas Morgul, and the Hornburg.īecause The Two Towers is the central portion of a longer work, its structure differs from that of a conventional novel. He also produced a final cover illustration showing these towers, but the publisher decided not to use it in order to save money on the production costs. However, he eventually settled on Orthanc and Minas Morgul and wrote a note to this effect which appears at the end of most editions of The Fellowship of the Ring. In letters and one sketch, he considered several possible sets of towers, including Minas Tirith and Barad-dûr, and even the possibility of leaving the matter ambiguous. Tolkien came up with the title under deadline pressure and later expressed dissatisfaction with it. 3.3 Book IV: The Journey of the Ringbearers / The Ring Goes EastĪ 1999 edition cover of The Two Towers novel. Brief Summary of Book: Rebel in the Library of Ever (The Library of Ever #2) by Zeno Alexander Necropolis by Jordan L. Hawk6/12/2023 There is so much they could do and discover. I hope this isn't the last one in the series. Read the book.Įven though I find Necropolis milder than the first three books, I really enjoyed it. I won't write about them since it would be a spoiler. I don't even think they should stop being like that, because every time one of them does something extraordinary for the other, it carries more weight than a simple declaration would.Ĭhristine has her own troubles in this book. They remain, but make their relationship even more beautiful. Those don't just magically disappear just because one of them said so. I love how the author uses both Griffin's and Whyborne's insecurities to show the depth of their bond. Whyborne, Griffin and Christine don't just face their usual dangers. And there are those who are prepared to do even worse. There are those who are trying to prevent them to reach the shrine they are searching for, of course. In the first book Whyborne learned the secret name of fire the second taught him the use of wind in Stormhaven he learned about water more than he wished where better to learn about earth than Egypt.Įven though the villains in this story won't surprise you, the story itself is, as always, wonderful. After a bizarre assassin tried to kill him at the museum, he and Griffin realize they have to go and help Christine. Whyborne is forced to travel to Egypt this time. Karl ove knausgård books6/11/2023 But even more frightening was the fact that it was so easy-that this combination of cockiness and cluelessness, as you so precisely pin it down, was apparently still very close to my present self. Everyone wants to be clever-it’s hard to give up that side and go blindly for stupidity. The tricky thing was, indeed, to refuse my older and more experienced self any space in the text. Was that a tricky thing to do? Did you feel that you were experiencing the depths of romantic humiliation all over again as you were writing? You capture perfectly a particular combination of cockiness and cluelessness that marks the onset of adolescence, while managing to keep the judgment of an older, wiser self at bay. The excerpt covers the young Karl Ove’s growing fascination with girls, and with one girl in particular, Kajsa, a student at a neighboring school. Retribution falls by chris wooding6/11/2023 So I owe great thanks to a number of online correspondents and writers who consistently push my thinking, and challenge me to think harder about it: Piechur of Retrostacja and Daniel Hemmens of FerretBrain have been directly responsible for me amending my thesis. I'd like to clarify that this has always been the intention of the blog: to air an idea in a seminar environment to generate discussion that provokes further thought which in turn, advances my research. In response to a number of conversations, recommended hyperlinks, and posted replies and rebuttals to my post on Steampunk as an Aesthetic, I'm modifying my approach somewhat. Hailed as the “king of sleaze,” tabloid editor Dennis Luxford is used to ferreting out the sins and scandals of people in exposed positions. Keep watching my blog for more book reviews! Okay okay, I am not writing anything more, for I will end up telling you the end, ah, so good is it really □ Well, for some, love is not made and people are destined to be on their own, but wait, story abhi khatm nahi hui hai (story is not yet over). Though the first part of the book In the Presence of the Enemy was lacking (umm, what can I say, I like Sergeant Havers’ characterization better and she was almost absent), the second part of the book, specially the end more than made for the lacuna. No, I am just writing down a different way of synopsis, and my post (book review) is not going to lead to any spoilers.
